WINTERBACH ART

Let me introduce myself. My name is Magaretha Winterbach.

During my travels all over the world I took thousands of photos. I select my favorite ones and I turn these into art. Each one is on framed canvas as I love the ambiance and texture it creates and then I personally sign each one. This keeps every piece special and unique. I do large canvasses to make them eye catching and ideal to draw attention to your special wall at home, office and in your business.

If you want to order, please send me a WhatsApp and I will reply within 24 hours. Prices include delivery to your nearest PostNet counter in South Africa. See order method and details at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for your support.

Early morning fishing

Place: Batumi, Georgia (Old Russia)

Date: 15 January 2023

It was early morning on a cold winters day in Batumi. The mist was coming in from the Black Sea when I went outside on the balcony. We were staying on the 26th floor of a building next to the beach. Through the mist I saw these boats on the water. When I zoomed in I realized that it was fishing boats. I was lucky to get this photo. I love the greyness with the hint of red. The top left boat is going somewhere? And how far does the net go on the right..? The little one in the middle seems lost.

Ancient Architecture in Turkey - Arches

December 2020 to Jan 2021 we toured around Turkey and visited many Ancient cities.

Agora of Smyrna

Date: 18 Dec 2020

The Agora of Smyrna, (Turkish: İzmir Agorası), is an ancient Roman agora located in Smyrna (present-day İzmir, Turkey). Originally built by the Greeks in the 4th century BC, the agora was ruined by an earthquake in 178 AD. Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius ordered its reconstruction.

There used to be a roof over this walkway. It leads to the area where the merchants peddled their goods. Above was the Open Area (Agora) where people gathered and more merchants did business.

Aspendos was an ancient Greco-Roman city in Antalya province. The city theatre is the best-preserved theatre of antiquity. With a diameter of 96m It was built in 155BC by the Greek architect Zenon.

I walked where normal people walked two thousand years ago with the dust on their sandals.

    Philharmonic Orchestra

Place: Hermanus Old Harbor. South Africa

Date: 18 March 2023

The town originally developed around this harbour from around the middle of the 1800's when plentiful fish and fresh water was found in the area. The old harbour was declared a national monument in 1970.

Once a year the Philharmonic Orchestra has an open air concert at the harbour. We heard about this concert purely by chance but what an experience it was! As the music started some dolphin jumped out of the water as if to see what sound was so beautiful. We didn't even know they were in the harbour.

Giants of Africa

African Elephant

Place: Kruger National Park

Date: 6 March 2021

We were sitting in our car and watching some Elephants on road when suddenly this Bull silently appaired from behind a bush right next to us and started flapping his ears as a warning. We were so focused on the road in front that we didn't see this one right next to us until he moved.  We retreated slowly and he was just standing there, watching us for a while.

White Rhinoceros & Friends

Place: Kruger National Park

Date: 6 March 2021

This one was also a big surprise. There was a herd of Impala lying and grazing in the tall grass. I was looking at the babies when the Rhinoceros walked out from behind the thorn bush. I didn't see him behind the bush.

It is amazing that such a beast can be so invisible. Took my husband a few minutes to see it until it come out in the open.

Misty Mountains-South Africa

I am fascinated by mist. Mist on mountains or the sea creates a mystical atmosphere. Our thoughts are shrouded from others by our own mist of privacy. As the sun or a breeze can dissipate the mist and reveal that which it had kept hidden, the warmth of those close to us can gently reveal our inner selves.

AROUND THE WORLD

Tracks in the snow

Place: Tbilisi, Georgia (Old Russia)

Date: 12 January 2023

On our way back to Istanbul. We had spent a month in Georgia enjoying the most amazing Russian hospitality and food. I was going to miss the Khachapuri (cheese bread) and Skhmeruli (garlic chicken).

These were my last tracks in the Georgian snow.

Vino underground cellar

Place: Tbilisi, Georgia

Date: 19 January 2023

The bar has an original interior and an excellent entourage in the basement of an old house , brick vaulted ceilings immerse you in the atmosphere of an old castle with a wine cellar . It is owned and managed by a collective of Georgia’s top artisan winemakers. Micro-cuvees where the winemaker made 100 bottles are common – it is quite possible to drink something here that you won’t be able to find anywhere else on the planet.

This is my husbands' hat and we finished the wine (and cheese.)

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

Place: Paris, France

Date: 16 April 2019

Notre-Dame is one of the most iconic monuments in Paris and France.  its construction spanned approximately two centuries, from 1163 to the middle of the 14th. It was recently devastated by fire but we were fortunate to see it before this tragedy.

I am always in awe of the sense of majesty that I feel in these old buildings, thinking of the centuries and the people that have wandered between the walls.

Sri Mariamman Temple

Place: Singapore

Date: 21 July 2003

Oddly enough, the biggest and oldest Hindu temple in Singapore is found in the middle of Chinatown. Dedicated to the Goddess of Rain, Mariamman, it was built (as a humble shed) in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, the first recorded Indian immigrant to enter colonised Singapore (he travelled with Raffles from Penang). It's famous for its staggeringly detailed gopuram (tower gateway). It is also the site of Theemidhi, a remarkable fire-walking ceremony held a week before the Hindu festival Deepavali.

Singapore seemed more modern than old. The city has developed very quickly, shaking off the shackles of colonialism.

We had the best chicken curry in a side street. Small little shop with tables in the narrow street. I still tell people about this chicken curry!

Heidelberg, Germany

Place: Heidelberg Castle, Germany

Date: 23 April 2004

This is the Gate Tower of Heidelberg Castle. The earliest castle structure was built before 1214 and expanded into two castles in 1294. In 1537, a lightning bolt destroyed the upper castle. The first known owner is the "Bishop of Worms". In 1764, another lightning bolt caused a fire which destroyed some rebuilt sections.

The two Medieval knights were created in 1535. Between them are two Palatine Lions which once held a coat of arms.

I can just imagine the quantities of Eisbein and German beer that has been consumed in this castle over the centuries. I had both in the Castle cafeteria.

Dubai

Place: The Arabian Desert, Dubai

Date: 28 Jan 2004

These two camels seemed lost in the vastness of the desert but they obviously are not - we are.

I had a fleeting moment to take this photo as, as we usually do, we were going somewhere else.

The desert has its own mysticism. It is endless and foreboding.

Pony Polo

Place: Kaduna, Nigeria

Date: 1 November 2016

My husband worked on Agriculture project development in Nigeria and our hosts took us to a Polo game in the Northern area.

Founded in 1918, Kaduna Polo Club is one of Nigeria's most prestigious polo grounds. Some traditions of the past still rank high amongst the Emirs. We were their honored guests but hopelessly inadequately dressed as they sat in their flowing robes and turbans.

Polo is a big event on their traditional calendar and some of the riders are also big, but the ponies played well.

Knysna forest giants

Place: Knysna, South Africa

Date: 5 September 2021

The forest covers area of 3,100 square kilometres (1,200 sq mi) in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. The largest tree towers over the rest of the canopy; standing 36+m tall and with a trunk circumference of 9m. Since 1939 the forests have mostly been within protected areas.

I was fascinated by this tree. I couldn't leave. I sat between its' roots for a long time, just thinking. The tranquility of this tree permeated through me.

Queen Mary

Place: Los Angeles, America

Date: 9 Feb 2004

The RMS Queen Mary is a retired British ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967. With the outbreak of World War II, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers during the conflict.

After the war the stately madam was again refitted for passenger service. She was officially retired from service in 1967. The City of Long Beach bought the ship to serve as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum and a hotel.

We spent a few nights in one of the cabins. Unfortunately no ghosts deemed us worthy of attention. We had dinner in the Sir Winston's restaurant at over R1,000.00 for two - a lot of money in 2004.

The Star Ferry

Place: Hong Kong

Date: 25 March 2003

Its principal routes carry passengers across Victoria Harbour, between Hong Kong Island, and Kowloon. The service is operated by the Star Ferry Company, which was founded in 1888 as the Kowloon Ferry Company, and adopted its present name in 1898.

In July 1873, an attempt was made to run steam ferries between Hong Kong and Kowloon. This was stopped at the request of the British consul, who feared it would enable visits to gambling houses in Kowloon. A service to the public was established in the mid-to-late 1870s, after the cession of Kowloon to the British in 1860.

It cost a HK$2 coin (R2 at the time) to travel between the island and the mainland. The coin had funny edges so we called it a "squigly". Hong Kong has a specific smell. A mix of street food, the sea and old buildings.
